Deloping (French for "throw away") was a common practice in dueling between the 1700-1800's. Deloping refers to one "throwing away their shot", or to fire their first shot off-target purposefully to avoid a certain outcome or conflict.

Reasons for deloping

There can be several deliberate reasons for one side of the conflict to delope. One common reason was to put an end to conflict, as deloping signified surrender, or if one thought their opponent was more superior at shot than them and throw away their shot to avoid fatal return fire.
