The Election of 1801 was a presidential election between Secretary Jefferson, President John Adams, Politician Burr and Former Minister Charles Pinckney. After a battle of 70 votes needed to win, Jefferson and Burr were victorious over John Adams and Charles Pinckney. At the 1801 Contingent election (election of which determines who is the president), the votes for Burr and Jefferson tied. Hamilton then started a campaign to get people voting for Jefferson. In the campaign he stated with strong words that Jefferson was taking the wrong steps while Burr was taking no steps. After the campaign ended Burr lost and Jefferson would become president. Hamilton had single-handedly ended Burr's political career. Burr would later settle his anger by challenging Hamilton to a duel.
