Great Britain is a large island directly away from Europe, and is commonly referred to as Britain. It is the ninth-largest island in the world.
The colonists that settled in the Thirteen Colonies, now called the United States, were once a part of Great Britain; the king, King George III, encouraged colonists the live away in America, the newly explored land. After years went by, America demanded independence from Great Britain's increasingly controlling laws and attitude, and soon began the American Revolution, a series a wars and events, reaching a climactic point in which Britain surrendered and gave America its independence to make its own decisions in a mass of its own people.
