Onaodowan grew up in West Orange, New Jersey and graduated from West Orange High School in 2005. Onaodowan briefly played football at West Orange High School but stopped after an injury during practice. As a result of the injury, Okieriete started to explore acting as an alternative career.
Onaodowan played roles on broadway shows such as Rocky the Musical and Cyrano de Bergerac and was in the ensemble of American Idiot. He also played title and lead roles in The Shipment, and Luce.
He played roles in films such as Thanks for Sharing, Gravity and Blue Bloods . He also played James Madison and Hercules Mulligan in the musical Hamilton on Broadway by 2015.
In July, 2017 he replaced Josh Groban as Pierre in the musical Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812.
He also played screen roles in Thanks for Sharing, Gravity, Blue Bloods and in a Grey's Anatomy spin-off Station 19.
